Veterans Community Events – Gig Line #65

GIG LINE

By Marsha M. Brown

This GIG LINE will give your eyes a rest…temporarily that is…meaning that because my window for submission precedes the Saturday, August 3rd veteran fundraiser, it also means I’ll have LOTS to tell you on Sunday, August 11th so, prepare yourself to hear all about the event in that issue. You know me, I’ll describe it ‘play by play’ and you’ll see and feel what we experienced that day.

It goes without saying understandably that those of you who have received your Dare County Veteran I. D. Cards are anxious to hear frequent updates as to where you can use them. Simply…GIG LINE is a means of keeping you apprised prior to an official link or web site being established that will post them in the interim. The Dare County Veterans Advisory Council is comprised of seven Council members, those being: Chairman Clarence Lewis, Vice Chairman Pete Groom, Members: Dale Draper, Joe Pope, Billy Brown, Lynda Hester and myself as Secretary. We hear you when you say you’d like to have express access in between weekly GIG Line columns to the list of participating businesses that honor your ‘CARD’. That being said, the lists of businesses that honor your ‘CARD’ to date are as follows:

*Ace Hardware (all 7 locations) – 10% off

*Buxton Auto & Marine – (Buxton) – 10% off purchases daily – sale items excluded engines, transmissions and equipment items excluded. Other exclusions may apply – see store for details

*Quarterdeck Restaurant (Frisco) – 10% discount off any entree

*Jolly Roger Restaurant & Bar (KDH) – free breakfast 1st Tuesday of the month; vets & locals 20% off dinner entrée year round; vets 10% off breakfast and on Veterans Day vets eat free

*Darrell’s Restaurant (Manteo) – 10% off a meal for a veteran with a ‘CARD’

*All Fixed Vacuums Sales & Service (KDH) – 10% off parts and vacuums

*Kellogg Supply Company, Inc. (Manteo, KDH, Duck & Edenton) – 10% off merchandise excluding building materials, special orders, sale or promotional items, other exclusions may apply

*The Cottage Shop (Outer Banks Mall in Nags Head) – 10% – see Kellogg Supply

*Kellogg Design Center (Outer Banks Mall in Nags Head) – 10% – see Kellogg Supply

Newadditions:

*Ortegaz Grill (Manteo) – 10% off any entree

*Pizza Hut (Manteo) – 10% off entire meal (excluding alcohol beverages)

*Garden Deli & Pizzeria (Manteo) – 10% discount

*Big Al’s Soda Fountain & Grille (Manteo) – 10% off to all military veterans

*Full Moon Café & Brewery (Manteo) – 10% off

*La Dolce Vita (Manteo) – 10% off any meal – alcohol not included in discount

PLEASE NOTE: From what I’ve understood, you probably shouldn’t expect discounts on alcohol beverages at food establishments. Also, regarding the updated list you see here, please understand that I have described the discount as it was presented to me; however sometimes businesses elaborate more on restrictions/exceptions and exclusions to the discounts than others. In the meantime, please enjoy the benefit of having a ‘CARD’ that identifies all HONORABLY discharged veteran cardholders to special recognition and a discount even if they didn’t retire; aren’t active duty or aren’t disabled. My 2 cents  worth? All honorably discharged veterans deserve honor, recognition and discounts

d-a-i-l-y.

O.K. its survey time and I have a question. How fun do you think it would be to attend a 1940 – 1950’s themed dance if it was held on the Outer Banks…would you go? Even if just to sit and listen to the music?  Would you like to conjugate with fellow veterans and their spouse or significant other and hear old classics and maybe even dress up in period clothes? Please give me your feedback. Personally, I’d enjoy it! Even though I wasn’t born in the 40’s, I still love the music…those good ole years…the time when life was simple…and a firm handshake was the real deal. I need to hear from you about this because it might take a while to put it together but I think it could be done perhaps by spring 2014 and result in one heck of an event. Have you jitterbugged lately? Have you looked at your spouse and reminisced about ‘the good old days’? Wouldn’t it be fun?  I’m interested in YOUR opinion.

Ok, I told you this GIG LINE would be a short one…still have lots to do for this coming Saturday, August 3rd but I can tell you one thing for sure, the fundraiser that I’ll reflect on and write about next week will be a doosey and you can count on it! Oh…and in the following GIG LINE after that, I have something really neat to share with you that I learned about through the August American Legion Auxiliary magazine I just received.

Lastly, I appreciate your phone calls, ideas, comments and letters of praise. YOU are the special ones though. My sweetie pie Billy and all of you are my heroes and I thank the good Lord for all of you every single day. Thank you men and women for serving our country; thank you for working to keep us free; thank you for your deployments over the years and for doing whatever it took to get you back home with us…the folks who love you; thank you wives and husbands who stood alone all too many times on pins and needles waiting for the loves of your lives to be back in your arms.

Oh! I have so much to tell you in the coming weeks but, until then…be happy, be safe, be proud and thank a veteran e-v-e-r-y single day. Call me anytime folks, I love to hear from you all. My cell is (252) 202-2058 or you can write to me through [email protected] and as usual…stay tuned.
