Celebrating and commemorating our veterans. United States military veterans and their families.

Thank a Veteran – Gig Line #78

GIG LINE

By Marsha M. Brown

Kudos to Sandy Scarborough and her staff at the Dare Center! Sandy and her ‘gang’ graciously hosted a truly wonderful Veterans Day Luncheon on Friday, November 8th and all 100 people who were there enjoyed it. Nice people who love and care about veterans including Commissioner Virginia Tillett spoke very kind, heartfelt and eloquent words to the veterans and their families…the afternoon was nothing short of a blessing.

While Billy and I were there three veterans signed up for their I. D. CARD(s) and obtained info pertinent to their lives and service to our country. Many folks picked up their flyers for the 3rd SALUTE TO VETERANS’ to be held in Manteo at Manteo First Assembly on Saturday, Nov. 9th at 7:00 P.M.; to the Fraternal Order of Eagles pig picking fund raiser to be held Sunday, Nov. 10th at 1:00 PM in Kill Devil Hills and for the three day veteran weekend event starting Friday, Nov. 15th – 17th that is sponsored by the Dare County Arts Council. If you’ll be in town, for any of these, please don’t miss them. For the event the Arts Council is sponsoring, you can go online to www.darearts.org and read more about the concert on Friday night at Festival Park featuring Molasses Creek and Jonny Waters & Company as well as the two day free Veterans Writing Project. What G-R-E-A-T people we have in Dare County…I love ‘em all, don’t you?

Please don’t forget to attend the Veteran’s Day Memorial Services at the Old Courthouse in downtown Manteo at 11:00 AM on Memorial Day, Monday, Nov. 11th and then again at 12:30 P.M. in Kill Devil Hills on Veterans Drive by the Kill Devil Hills Town Hall.

Last Tuesday, Billy issued I.D. CARD(s) at the Admin. Building and within an hour and 10 minutes, 11 veterans got their ‘CARD’. That tickles me! As of this writing, we now have 203 veterans who can get discounts and the business list is growing too! YIPPEE! Hot diggity dog! More on that later! We’ve made more business contacts and we’re just waiting for the paperwork to be processed.

This past week has been slammed…in fact the whole last two months have been for everybody working on events for our vets! Thank you wonderful people! You’re making the men and women who served and sacrificed happy, proud and honored!

Oh by the way, when you finish this column (and if you have a computer), please go to it and enter in the search area: veteran day discounts. With everything going on right now I can’t list them all but if you look that up and even juggle the words around to: discounts for veterans…you’ll be surprised how many stores offer something for ALL veterans, not just retired, active or reserve this whole weekend! And if you’re going to Chesapeake or surrounding areas in Virginia, there are stores and restaurants galore there that will surprise you. Some may not do it every day but this weekend they will…take my word for it and check it out!

Much to your surprise this GIG LINE is short only because I have bunches of things to do yet in preparation for this wonderful holiday. Trust me when I say, it won’t last…next time, on Sunday, Nov. 17th, I’ll have a ton of things to cover. But if there’s anything my sweetie pie Billy or I can help you with, please write to me at editor@giglineheroes.com.

So, I love you all…I thank you all…and your families…and in the next GIG LINE I’ll be writing all about what I saw, heard and ate (…uh ohhhh!) this Veterans Day weekend.

In the meantime, be happy, be safe, be proud and thank e-v-e-r-y single veteran you see…they are ALL top notch people and the crème de la crème! Until next time…stay tuned…
